Charlie was born in Denver and grew up New Jersey before living in in Los Angeles, Boston, Maine, and Utah.  Now he calls San Francisco home.

Charlie's professional background is in B2B customer acquisition and marketing and has worked in the technology, transportation, and financial services fields.  He has been going to the Virgin Islands practically his entire life and envisions enjoying SummerSalt with future generations.  Charlie's ideal day on Tortola starts with shore casting for tarpon fight in the morning, snorkeling in the afternoon, painkillers in the pool in the early evening, and hanging out with the nautical types at Pusser's Landing in Soper's Hole, at night.

Sally Muir

Villa Owner and Manager

(908) 391-1315

Sally was born in northern Virginia, and lived in San Diego, Chicago, and Denver before settling in to split her time between Bridgewater, NJ and Charleston, SC (Wadmalaw Island to be exact).  Her professional life in product management at AT&T brought her to Puerto Rico and St. Thomas where she helped develop the telecommunications infrastructure. After falling in love with the stunning scenery, the warmth of the people, and the pace of life in the islands, the West End of Tortola became the extended Muir Family's regular vacation destination.

Sally has been the backbone of SummerSalt from concept, to completion, to present.  She has from the beginning overseen nearly every aspect of the villa’s design and daily operation.  SummerSalt is her baby.  Her favorite thing to do at at the villa is hosting her girls only vacations with her life long friends from her Holton-Arms days.

Villa Owner

John and Sally have benn married for... well, quite some time.  Born and raised in Wilmette on Chicago's North Shore, John has lived in Yuma, Arizona, Denver, and now NJ and SC.  After working in the construction industry, John began Airframe and Powerplant school in Denver and finished in Teterboro, NJ.  He began his career as an aircraft technician for Butler Aviation and has been subsequently working at Continental and now United for over 25 years.

John has been an avid fisherman and boater from his childhood on Lake Michigan, summers in Wisconsin, and trout fishing in the Rockies.  From his first visit to the BVI he felt a deep connection to its land and sea.  Tortola and SummerSalt are now a part of his DNA.  The best things about the BVI to John is his early morning jogs.

How SummerSalt Came About

SummerSalt is the culmination of effort born out of a lasting adoration for the Virgin Islands.  Our family had been visiting the islands since the mid ‘80’s and fell in love with the natural beauty of the land and the warmth of it’s people.  In the mid '90's our family decided that we simply had to own our own tiny piece of this paradise and we set out in search of the ideal area and concluded that The West End of Tortola at Smuggler’s Cove was the perfect fit.  It’s was close to Soper’s Hole and it’s amenities, yet was very private and completely unspoiled.  Our family considered purchasing an existing home but when a lot became available that was situated just above Smuggler’s and at the end of a cul-du-sac, we knew that we had no other choice but to build our dream home instead. Collaborating with architect Alan Smith of Smith Arneborg Ltd., our family designed a flowing living space that drew inspiration from all of the gorgeous homes that we had the pleasure of visiting over the years.  By combining all of our favorite functional, structural, and aesthetic design elements we were able create a space that was uniquely our own.  After navigating all of the quirks of building in the BVI, and finalizing all the fine details, SummerSalt was completed in the fall of 1998 and has been the second home of not just our family, but many other families ever since.

The Rest of the SummerSalt Team

In addition to Sally, John, and Charlie there are a handful of great folks who help to make sure that the day to day runs smoothly.  This includes a site manager who helps to coordinate everything from electrical work, to overseeing contractors, and even making sure replacement items for the villa clear customs.  Also, a property caretaker whom readies the house for the guests' arrival, escorts them to the villa when they arrive, and performs a housekeeping service mid week.  There is also a small ground's staff that takes care of the pool and garden.  Unless you are there for an extended stay, it's unlikely that you'll meet the crew, but their efforts behind the scenes will ensure that you have a carefree stay.
